SAM SHOMENTO

Sam Shomento is a U.S. Army public affairs mass communicator with the 10th Mountain Division. In his career as an infantryman, military mountaineer and storyteller, Sam brings a rare vantage point to the military photojournalism field that most media can’t reach. Sam’s exploits across a variety of disciplines have allowed him to partner with Soldiers at the cutting edge, where authentic stories of the men and women on the ground take place.

As an infantryman and military mountaineer, Sam began his career in the light infantry and reconnaissance field, where he earned his Ranger Tab in 2021. He then went to Mountain Training Group, teaching and advising small unit tactics and practices in cold weather and mountainous terrain, earning certification from both the Army and civilian sectors of education in mountaineering, technical rescue, Arctic warfare and avalanche safety. In 2024, he advised and participated in the first re-creation of the Hale to Vail ski traverse, a 26 mile backcountry ski movement through the Colorado Rockies depicted in “The High Ground,” a feature length documentary covering the story of 10th Mountain Division Soldiers reconnecting with their historical roots. His expeditions and missions have taken him all around the world in places such as the Alaska Range, the Lofoten Islands of Norway and the Swiss Alps.

As a mass communicator, Sam’s work documenting the story of the 10th Mountain Division and the Soldiers within it has been featured across numerous mediums, including GoArmy and U.S. Army media campaigns, The Army Times, Powder Magazine and others. In March of 2026, alongside the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team, he covered the FIS Cross-Country Skiing World Cup, including the final race and retirement ceremony of America’s most decorated cross-country skier, Jessie Diggins. In June of 2026, he was the first ever American military photojournalist to attend the Swiss army’s Partnership for Peace Mountaineering Course.

From behind the lens, Sam’s mission is to bring people as close to the story as he was, authentically representing his subjects with creativity, dignity and respect.
